Football Club Lorient Bretagne Sud (French pronunciation: [lɔˈryɑ̃ bʁətaɲ syd]; commonly referred to as simply Lorient) is a French football club based in Lorient. The club was founded in 1926 and made its first appearance in Ligue 1, the first division of French football, in the 1998–99 season. Lorient is managed by Christian Gourcuff. Gourcuff formerly played for the club from 1982–1986 and is in his third stint as manager of the club.
History
Lorient were formed as an amateur club on 2 April 1926 and known as Football Club Lorientais.[1] They first played in the regional third division, but progressed to join the Division d'Honneur in 1929.
The club turned professional in 1995, although the club has had two earlier periods as a professional club, between 1967–1977 and 1988–1991.
The club won the French Cup in 2002 and were finalists in the Coupe de la Ligue the same year. In the 2005–06 season, the club finished third in Ligue 2, earning promotion to Ligue 1.
Lorient finished 14th in the division in 2006–07, 10th in 2007–08 and 10th in 2008–09 and 7th in the 2009-10 season.
